Gabriela Oberkofler
Gabriela Oberkofler studied from 1997 to 1998 at the University of Visual Arts, Corner Brook, Newfoundland in Canada, from 1998 to 2002 at the University of Applied Sciences for Art Therapy in Nürtingen and from 2002 to 2009 at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design. Since 2009 she has been touring Germany and abroad with her art projects and has received numerous awards and prizes for her exhibitions and actions, such as the Paul-Flora-Prize 2014 or the Gerlinde-Beck-Prize 2018.
In her work, she is on the one hand concerned with reflecting the direct environment and showing local structures from the perspective of folk culture, and on the other hand with dealing with global issues.
“YOU COULDN’T STAND THE SIGHT OF THE MOUNTAINS. NOWADAYS THEY USE THEM AS GYMNASTICS EQUIPMENT.” Nina Bussmann
Christiane Lange writes about the artist, who comes from Jenesien in South Tyrol and lives in Stuttgart: “Gabriela Oberkofler looks closely, observes flowers and leaves under a magnifying glass. When enlarged, structures of flowers and pistils, buds and stigma, of stems and needles become visible. She transfers their logic to large sheets of paper. Filigree lines grow very slowly, coloured patterns stand alone or overrun the papers. They grow bigger and bigger, geometric arrangements become apparent and at the same time the structures always remain delicate. The artist doesn’t just make the beauty of small details visible to us. She doesn’t just look at nature up close, but takes an equally searching view of the big picture.”
